Heritage Day 2005
April 1, 2005

OFFICE OF THE MAYOR
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: David Rivera

TORRINGTON – Mayor Owen J. Quinn is calling on the City’s churches, ethnic organizations and clubs to play a major part in the City’s 2005 Heritage Day celebration.

This year’s Heritage Day will be held August 13, at Coe Park from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

“Heritage Day is a celebration of the great ethnic diversity we have here in Torrington, a diversity we’ve had for more than a century,” said Mayor Owen J. Quinn. “The churches in our great city represent all of the ethnic cultures that make up Torrington and I want the churches to be a key component of Heritage Day 2005.”

This year, Quinn wants more ethnic and cultural organizations - like UNICO, La Via Latina, and the local Polish, Irish and German clubs - to participate.

Quinn wants all of the city’s churches, cultural/ethnic clubs and organizations to participate in Heritage Day by reserving free space at the event.  Participants then can sell homemade foods and crafts.  Organizers also want participants to think about providing entertainment for the event and displaying artwork and cultural memorabilia.

“It’s a great way for churches and clubs to raise money and it’s a great way to share their heritage and culture with the community,” Quinn said.

“Last year was great, and this year is going to be even better,” Quinn said.  “There were all kinds of food and entertainment and we want the churches and ethnic groups to help make this another fantastic Heritage Day.”

Churches and organizations wishing to participate in Heritage Day can call the Mayor’s office, 489-2228.
