City to Remember the '55 Flood
City Officials are planning a special 50th Anniversary ceremony in August to pay tribute to those that lost their lives during the August 19, 1955 Flood and remember the event that forever changed the City.

Mayor Owen J. Quinn’s office, and the Torrington Historical Society, are planning a morning ceremony for Friday Aug. 19, 2005.

The ceremony will include City and state officials and presentations by the Mayor’s office and Torrington Historical Society

A special display depicting the flood, using then and now photography, will be unveiled at a location to be announced.  The permanent historical memorial, that is currently being designed, will also bear the names of the City residents that died during the natural disaster that devastated Torrington.

The Torrington Historical Society is planning a reception following the ceremony and will have a special ’55 Flood exhibit inside the carriage house at Hotchkiss-Fyler mansion on Main Street.

The Historical Society is also looking for artifacts and memorabilia from the public to display as part of the exhibit.  Anyone wishing to loan such artifacts and memorabilia can contact Mark McEachern at 482-8260.
