CITY SET FOR 2ND ANNUAL HERITAGE DAY CELEBRATION THIS SATURDAY
TORRINGTON – Dozens of City organizations and ethnic groups are expected to participate in Saturday’s Heritage Day at Coe Park in a celebration of Torrington’s ethnic and cultural diversity.
The 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., event is expected to draw countless numbers of residents from Torrington and the surrounding area, City officials said.
Coe Park will be filled with the smells of ethnic cooking and music and entertainment will fill the day as well, Mayor Owen J. Quinn said.
“Heritage Day is really a celebration of the cultures and ethnic communities that make up our great city,” Mayor Quinn said. “For me, it’s a celebration of my Irish and Italian heritage. It’s different for everyone but Heritage Day allows all of us to learn something about our neighbors.”
During the 1970s and 1980s, Heritage Day was a popular city sponsored event. In the early 1990s, however, the event was stopped for unknown reasons. Mayor Quinn revived Heritage Day last year following a campaign promise to restart defunct public events like it, as well as others such as the 4th of July Fireworks and Downtown Street Fairs.
The entertainment schedule is as follows:
