FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Torrington CT –February 27, 2006– The Mayor has announced that in order to kick off Colon Cancer Awareness month he will be holding a press conference in conjunction with Mayor’s Task Force Against Cancer.  This conference will take place in the Council Chambers on Wednesday, March 1st at 10 a.m.
The event will be to promote awareness and encourage regular screenings for people who are over the age of 50.  The Mayor will have Dr. Scirica from the Litchfield County Gastroenterology Association speak during the conference as well.
In Connecticut alone there will be an estimated 1,700 new cases of colorectal cancers with a potential 630 Connecticut Residents who are expected to lose their lives from colon cancer this year.  If colon cancer is detected early more than 90 percent of people survive.  The Office of the Mayor urges you to attend this event and help spread the word for people to become more aware and proactive.
