Earth Machine - Backyard Composter Available
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

TORRINGTON, CT 06790C

The Earth MachineTM
Available to Torrington Residents

The City of Torrington is continuing its home composting program to enable the community to care for the earth in our own backyards and reduce the garbage going to landfills.  Through this program, residents can purchase the Earth Machine™, a home composter, from Norseman Plastics for only $25.00, a significant savings from the regular retail price of $80.00.

Used in conjunction with the Earth Machine, the two gallon Kitchen Collector will also be available at a cost of only $7.00, for easy carrying and emptying of food waste into the Earth Machine.

The Earth Machine and Kitchen Collector are available in limited supply.  Please call the Engineering Department at 489-2234 to schedule pickup.  Pickup will be at City Hall Room 311.  Payment by check, money order or cash is acceptable.  First come, first served.

Homeowners can use the Earth Machine™ to compost fruit, vegetable scraps, crushed eggshells, tea bags, coffee grounds and filters from the kitchen.  Add layers of mulched leaves, dried grass, garden plants, old potting soil and soft plant stems from the garden.  With a little maintenance and care, in about three months the compost will break down naturally into humus, which homeowners can use to enrich the soil in their gardens.

“The Earth Machine™ is a very user-friendly, earth-friendly device”, says Jerry Rollett, Torrington’s Public Works Director, “and we are delighted to help reduce the use of landfills and, at the same time, introduce people to the pleasures of making soil right in their own backyards!”
