INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
(CITYWIDE IT SUPPORT)
2009-2010: As the City of Torrington’s data grows redundancy and backup are key factors in data disaster recovery. Applications have become invaluable in how the city does its daily business. Parameters have been established to insure disk subsystems remain up and running optimally with failover. This includes the implementation of IBM’s data storage appliances allowing duplication of mission critical servers using VMware Technology and procedures. Currently the City is using 27 various software application’s serving various needs to each department on a daily basis. Software and hardware lifecycle is primarily maintained by the IT staff with 1 part time assistant. Although it seems overwhelming based on the number of applications and servers Citywide, the ability to maintain an optimal
network and data center infrastructure is possible because of the latest technology tools being made available. Certification training is also an important role as well and tools are available to the IT staff from IBM, Cisco and Microsoft, etc. 2010 will bring the relocation to our newly renovated City Hall including our scheduled upgrades to be made on various workstations, servers and the clustering of Microsoft Exchange 2010. IT has implemented Virtual LANs at the network layer for tighter security and bandwidth optimization which simplifies network management. Finally we will be implementing QoS (quality of service) for applications via Group Policy.
2010 will be also be an exceptional year for both the IT staff and city departments with the deployment of our new GIS/ARC and Laser Fiche system. This will allow map layering of the city and data retention on a digital basis, allowing various departments to view detailed maps and archived data based on their growing needs to better serve our community.
Respectfully submitted,
