Residential Garbage Collection
Q: I just moved into my new house. Do I need to notify the City for trash pickup?
A: You do not need to notify the City, just put your garbage out on trash day and it will be picked up. Trash is removed from the curbside only once a week by Waste Management. Waste Management is a private company under contract with the City to pick up your trash. Click on this link for a weekly pick up schedule of your street.
Q: Where is the landfill in Torrington?
A: The landfill was closed several years ago.
Q: Can I put my household appliances out for trash removal?
A: Yes, household appliances such as toasters, ovens, washing machines, dryers, refrigerators (all refrigerator doors must be unhinged) and water heating units will be picked up at curbside.
Q: How do I dispose of roof shingles, construction & demolition debris, screen doors, windows, doors, dry wall, masonry products?
A: No construction type materials are accepted for regular trash pickup. You should make alternate arrangements with a private refuse collector to remove these types of waste.
Q: What do I do with paint cans?
A: The garbage collector will pick up cleaned and emptied paint cans, not exceeding 5 gallons in capacity with the lids removed. If you have a nearly empty can of water-based or latex paint, throw some clumping cat litter into it to absorb the leftover paint, throw out the paint-soaked clumps and leave the can out with the lid off. Oil-based paints are considered hazardous household waste and can only be disposed of during the “Household Hazardous Waste” Collection Day that is held twice a year in May and October. The May collection day is held in the town of Falls Village, the October Collection Day is held at the Water Pollution Control Plant on Bogue Road in Harwinton. You may register at the City Hall, Room 311,
at 140 Main Street, Torrington.
Q: May I throw out residential electronic equipment?
A: Yes, residential electronic equipment can be put out with your regular garbage on your collection day.
Q: I have a foam hot tub cover that is 90 inches in length and width and other similar large type products. Why didn't it get picked up with my regular trash?
A: The items are too big to be picked up. It needs to be broken up and put into bags or tied up with string.
Q: When can I throw out my Christmas tree?
A: Christmas tree pick up is scheduled for a week in mid January. Please put your Christmas tree out ONLY on their collection day (same day as your regular garbage pick up day) to prevent plows from covering them with snow. For condo residents, pick up will be anytime during the week of January 13th, starting at 6 a.m. All plastic bags and decorations must be removed from the tree prior to pick up.
