The Nutmeg Conservatory for the Arts
58 Main Street, Torrington
(860) 482-4413
One of Torrington's treasures is The Nutmeg Conservatory for the Arts. The Conservatory, proud recipient of the 2000 Connecticut Governor's Arts Award for excellence,
was founded by Sharon E. Dante in December of 1970. Nutmeg Conservatory is currently the home of Nutmeg Music, Nutmeg Ballet (one of the country's most respected classical ballet training facilities), and WAPJ 89.9FM (a Community Service Radio station dedicated to serving the greater Torrington area.
The Conservatory for the Arts offers a wide ranging program of both performance events and an intensive teaching program, providing not only ballet training but also music and drama instruction.
The Nutmeg Ballet is committed to producing world-class dancers through quality pre-professional training, based on the Vaganova program. Throughout the year, the Ballet maintains a complete performance season including Fall Repertoire, Spring Repertoire, and the International Summer Festival. Students also appear in full-length productions such as Nutcracker, Coppelia, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and other classics.
The Nutmeg Conservatory's expanded music program, under the musical direction of Houry M. Schmeizl, seeks to provide students with self-discipline, confidence and life-long skills. Nutmeg Music offers a superior faculty and tailors lessons, master classes, chamber music ensembles, and performance opportunities to meet the needs of each individual student. Nutmeg Music is an accredited member of the National Guild of Community Schools.
The students and staff have recently moved into their new home on Main Street, a dream that has taken several years and millions of dollars to realize. Extensive renovations to a downtown landmark building have resulted in a state-of-the-art facility with dance studios and dormitory facilities located under one roof.
This facility, located immediately adjacent to the Warner Theatre, was completed in June 2001. With two well-known Cultural Arts organizations acting as Main Street anchors, their stories and their successes are an extraordinary example of downtown revitalization.
