Torrington Demographics
Torrington is located in the northwestern region of Connecticut, in Litchfield County. The city is home to approximately one-third of the county's residents with a population of 34,688 and an estimated 14,300 households.

The Per Capita income in 1998 was $19,684, approximately $7,000.00 less than the state average. However, because the cost of living is also lower in the area, the standard of living is at par with the statewide standard. A good example of this can be found in Torrington's housing costs. Torrington falls well below the average and median housing prices, making ownership a reality for many people.

The economic base of Litchfield County is diverse. Agriculture is still a substantial business in the outlying areas but Torrington has for many years been the commercial and industrial center, drawing consumers and employees from smaller communities.

There are more than 100 manufacturers in Torrington, employing 5,670 people or 33% of our workers. The Service Industry provides 30.8% of our jobs in 678 firms, which translates to roughly 5300. The Trade Industry, with roughly 470 firms and 3200 employees, rounds out the top three employment sectors.
