Mayor Appoints Interim Police Chief

TORRINGTON CT – June 14, 2018 – Mayor Carbone today has announced that she has appointed Torrington Police Captain Wayne Newkirk to the position of Interim Police Chief.  Captain Newkirk has currently been serving as Acting Deputy Chief since February of this year, and has been a member of the Torrington Police for the past 23 years.    

 

“Interim Chief Newkirk has been an integral part of our Police Department for decades.  His knowledge of our community, leadership skills, and passion for law enforcement are just some of the assets he possesses.  The Torrington Police Department and the City of Torrington are fortunate to have someone of his caliber at the helm while we undertake the process to select a new Police Chief”

 

“As the City and Board of Public Safety begin the process for finding an appointing a new permanent Police Chief, it is crucial that the Department have solid leadership during this period of transition.  I have the utmost confidence in Interim Chief Newkirk and I am grateful to him for rising to the occasion and continuing to serve our community” the Mayor added. 

 

Interim Chief Newkirk will officially begin his new role on Saturday, June 16th 2018.  He will serve in this role until a new Police Chief has been selected.
