Torrington to Investigate SMART Trash Program. Public Informational Session Scheduled

Torrington, like all communities, continues to deal with rising costs associated with providing essential municipal services such as waste disposal.

In an effort to reduce costs while still providing services to residents, the City of Torrington is exploring the possibility of implementing a Save Money and Reduce Trash “SMART” system of trash collection.  This is an innovative and new way to encourage increased recycling, and reduce the amount of trash that residents produce, thus reducing our annual costs.   As a municipality, it is our responsibility to study and implement cost-effective, equitable solutions to long-term challenges.  Taking steps to reduce trash costs now would enable Torrington residents to reap the benefits of a better city today and in the future.

It is estimated that Torrington could see a budget reduction of $2,143,262 annually in trash disposal, and also realize a higher savings of approximately $427,680 from increased recycling efforts.

Currently, several communities throughout the Northeast have implemented this program with a high level of success.  Locally, Stonington and Mansfield have already implemented this program.  New London and several other municipalities are in the process of studying implementation as well.

Please take a moment to review the PowerPoint presentation and Key Points & FAQ to learn how this program works, the benefits, and how this would impact residents.
