What happens if I pay late?

The first installment of dual installment real estate and personal property taxes in the amount of $50 or more, and motor vehicle taxes in full, are due on July 1 and payable on or before August 1. The second installment of dual installment real estate and personal property taxes in the amount of $50 or more, and supplemental motor vehicle taxes in full, are due on January 1 and payable on or before February 1.

In accordance with Connecticut General Statue (CGS) 12-146, past due payments are subject to interest at the rate of one and one half percent per month from the due date of the tax (July 1st or January 1st) with a minimum interest of $2.00.  Payments made on August 2nd for the July payments or February 2nd for the January payments, including payments postmarked August 2nd or February 2nd, and later, are past due and will incur 3% interest, representing two months’ delinquency (i.e. July & August or January & February). Payments postmarked August 1st or February 1st are considered timely.  The City is required by law to accept the postmark as the date of payment.  (When the last day to pay, ex, August 1 or February 1, falls on a weekend or holiday the following business day becomes the last day to pay. Ex. August 1, 2015 is a Saturday so Monday, August 3, 2015 will be the last day to pay without interest, both in person and/or postmarked).
