Salary Range: $45,000 to $60,000 per year

Full Time (35 hours per week)

Reports To: Director of Elderly Services or their designee

FLSA Status: Exempt

JOB OBJECTIVES:

Responsible for support of social services programing at the Sullivan Senior Center that serves over 7,000 senior residents of Torrington and surrounding towns.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Work with the Director and his/her designee to serve the needs of senior’s questions with Medicare questions, social security direction, assistance applications and matters related to aging.
  • Process Energy Assistance Applications during the relevant filing period, working with senior center partners.  e.g., New Opportunities of Waterbury.
  • Process State of CT Rent Rebate Program according to State Statute for the Elderly and Disabled during the relevant filing period.
  • Demonstrate the ability to effectively train and apply State of CT Rent Rebate Program regulations and other related activities.
  • Demonstrate the ability to effectively follow the State and Federal guidelines for all applications.
  • Demonstrate the ability to submit, mail, file electronically, and process applications on time as defined by deadlines.
  • Travel to elderly/disabled housing and follow-up with applicants to complete application process.
  • Assist with Medicare, Medicaid and Medicare Advantage applications and referrals as needed.
  • Perform in-home visits and assessments.
  • Assist in preparing grants.
  • Effectively refer individuals in need to the appropriate agencies. e.g., Financial Assistance Programs, Housing, Technology assistance etc.
  • Support and participate in Senior Center events.
  • Answer telephones, perform clerical and maintenance duties, and schedule appointments.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively operate a PC, iPad, Laptop, wireless and Bluetooth and standard office equipment Printers, Fax Machine and Telephones.
  • Demonstrated success applying tact and courtesy to create harmony with senior citizens, employees, volunteers and others.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Demonstrated ability to transport people and carry up to 35 pounds without assistance.
  • Climbing stairs, lifting senior center clients, sitting at a desk and working continuously for extended periods of time, lifting and carrying supplies and materials.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (MINIMUM): 

  • Demonstrate a desire to work in social service, primarily with a population over the age of 60.
  • Possess a valid driver's license, in good standing throughout the course of employment.
  • Demonstrate a desire to train and learn on the job in a flexible service environment.
  • Possess an earned bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college in Human Services, Social Services, Gerontology or related field preferred.
  • 3-4 years of related experience including at least 2 years of supervisory experience, or equivalent experience desired.
