AOA Exempt 1 Motor Vehicle

IMPORTANT QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS REGARDING AN AOA EXEMPTION

How can I submit an "AOA" application?

You can submit your application in person or via 'snail mail' (US mail). Be sure to write legibly and include your contact phone number, as well as your Commanding Officer's (CO) signature or a copy of the front of your military ID, in case there is a question about your motor vehicle.

Will the exemption last as long as I have my car?

No. You must re-apply every year before December 31st immediately following the July 1st date the bill is due or you waive your right to exemption for that tax period.

Can I use the "AOA" to exempt my spouse's motor vehicle?

If your spouse is not an active duty serviceperson, then their motor vehicle cannot be exempted; except if your name (the active duty serviceperson) is also on the registration.

I sold (traded, totaled, junked) the auto I had registered on October 1. Can I transfer the exemption that my old auto qualified for?

If you replaced your exempted motor vehicle with the new or new-to-you motor vehicle within two (2) months AND you transferred the marker plate from the old motor vehicle to the replacement motor vehicle, the Torrington Assessor has discretion to allow the AOA exemption to follow the registration for the tax year. This is a courtesy and with understanding that occasionally the need to change arises. Multiple and/or frequent plate transfers cannot be tracked and exempted.
